Hi Jamie! We haven’t used the non-capsule kind before but would say that using the amount in one serving is probably a good place to start. Since one capsule is one serving, we’d guess that whatever amount the company puts on the package of the loose powdered versions as one serving would have similar effects on the coconut milk! Will you let us know how much you end up using and how it turns out?
Love the combo of dried cherries & pistachios, a great diversion from the usual almonds and cranberries, not to mention the decadent addition of dark chocolate. Sounds like a winner! Definitely giving it a try!
I love chai spices and would never have thought to use them on popcorn. But I’m thinking about it now! In fact, I suspect I will be thinking about it until I make the time to try it.
This sounds like an interesting trail mix recipe. I often make trail mix, not just for hiking but to have a good available snack any time between meals. Though I always make traditional trail mixes with a variety of nuts, dried fruits and chocolate I do like popcorn and the spicy trail mix sounds like it would a great additional recipe to try.
It is nice to have a couple versions of trail mix handy in your cupboard or desk so that you know you have a quick healthy snack whenever you need one so I will add this version to the cupboard.
I am totally unsurprised at how completely clever and delicious this trail mix is! You guys are so awesome. Vanilla coconut oil?! So the spices stick to it?! Even that description is delicious. YUM!!!
Scrambled eggs were my intro to cooking as well. Great article! Also, I love cauliflower but don’t know any other ways than roasting… have any cauliflower tips?
Scrambled eggs are a great intro to cooking! And you can add so many fun extras to them as you learn. We love sautéed cauliflower….and if you check out our chocolate smoothie recipe, you’ll see a pretty creative use for steamed cauliflower!!
Ahhh, the kitchen, best place to hang out anyway so may as well teach the kids how to cook. It is an ideal place to talk and teach kids about colors, numbers, measuring, cooking and healthy eating. It will certainly come in handy as the kids grow up and become more independent and start cooking for themselves.
We cannot agree more! You learn science, measuring, and social skills in the kitchen. And yes, the more time kids spend in the kitchen the more they become confident in cooking for themselves later on!
It warms my heart to hear someone say, yes, take your kids to the grocery store with you. Some articles on streamlining shopping say go alone. It’s quicker and easier. Maybe so, but what a wonderful opportunity we are missing when we don’t include our children in making the list and shopping for the items. Kids learn how to shop and how to select healthy, good tasting foods. It pulls them into the process of putting good food on the table right from the first step. Great interview!
Thanks!! We agree — it was so nice to hear her say that she not only takes her son grocery shopping with her but that it’s a fun time for them both and something she looks forward to. She was really nice and seemed so genuine about her love of cooking for and with her family. Thanks for reading!
I had not yet heard of the Chile Mocha but am definitely interested in trying it! I love sweet and spicy almost as much as sweet and salty. Sounds like your version with almond milk is worth checking out. Thanks!
This was a great interview. I love taking my kids to the store because they love helping to pick what we eat. Of course, there is a lot of saying no…but input is always helpful. I started having my kids make their own lunches for school this year so they can be in charge of what they eat (within reason of course.) I also agree with just keep trying, even if they don’t like something. My oldest daughter has really started to embrace spicy food and that opens up whole new avenues of cooking!
Thank you! Having your kids make their lunches is such a great idea. We love that since when kids make a meal, they’re more likely to eat it! And we love that you take them grocery shopping with you. It does take a bit more time, but it’s a really valuable lesson they’ll use for the rest of their lives!
How could it not be good? Coffee, chocolate and chile. A hot Chile Mocha sounds like a great cold weather drink and I can also see an iced version being mighty good on a hot summer day.
Yes! Though this is a seasonal drink, so you’ll have to make your own iced version if you want it in the summertime! And if you do make your own, we ask that you please share with us. 🙂
I tried the seasonal drinks…The chile mocha was okay. At the end I had a bunch of powder that wasn’t stirred into the drink. That might have been the reason it was just okay. However, loved the almond milk!
Oh no! Ya, definitely important to get all that cocoa-y flavor into the milk. Maybe give it another try at another location? We agree — the almond milk is GOOD!
Glad you’ve had good luck with the method. It’s so cool how simple it is….and ya, once you make one batch you don’t have to use any more probiotic capsules!
Hi! Sometimes it doesn’t thicken up until you put it in the fridge and some batches just don’t thicken. The type of probiotic can make a difference, as can the temperature/time of year. We’ve had the best results with VSL #3 probiotic and when we make batches from a previous batch (i.e. instead of using a new probiotic capsule we stir 1/4 cup of a previous batch of yogurt into the new jar of coconut milk) we get the thickest yogurt. We’d recommend trying to put it in the fridge and seeing if it thickens a bit and how the flavor is. If the flavor is good, you might try using 1/4 cup of that yogurt to make your next batch. If the flavor is off, you might try a different probiotic. Keep us posted…and good luck!
Perhaps I didn’t read too well, but I cannot find information about the ground turkey in the recipe – how much of it and what kind (turkey breast?)? Would you be so kind as to give it to me? To me it seems a very delicious recipe…..
Hi! Thanks for catching this! We added the turkey into the recipe so it should be complete now. Let us know if you make it — it’s one of our favorites!
Hi! You could try cooked and mashed sweet potato or using a couple dates instead (you’d just need to blend the dates into the milk really well). Applesauce could also be a great sub for the banana. Will you let us know if you try any of these subs and how they turn out?
So glad you like these! This was actually one of our very first recipes we created and it’s still one our favorites, too! The coconut yogurt on top sounds DELISH!
I am so curious about the cascara latte. I’ll be near a Starbucks next week and will look for it and the Sous Vide Egg Bites. Does the syrup made from it taste like coffee or is it fruity?
It has a really smooth coffee taste with a hint of caramel. The tall usually comes with 3 pumps of syrup so you can adjust to your taste preferences too. We usually go with 2 pumps instead of the 3! Can’t wait to hear what you think!
I like a good latte so after reading your description of the cascara latte will be giving that a try and the Sous Vide Egg Bites sound like a good, quick breakfast or a snack. Always nice to see some healthy options at Starbucks.
Can’t wait to hear what you think! We didn’t try it with the almond milk yet, but bet it would be really good (and maybe a little less syrup). The sous vide egg bites are such a great way to get a protein-packed snack or breakfast!
You can substitute this yogurt in ounce for ounce for dairy yogurt in most recipes. It’s great as a substitute for creamy dressings like Ranch, etc. When using it in sauces, it does thin out a bit once it’s heated, but definitely adds creaminess and body to sauces. We’d love to hear what sauces/dressing recipes you try it in! We also love using it in baking in place of dairy yogurt. We’ve tried it in scone recipes and it’s GREAT!
Awesome write up! I browse your site regularly and
you always post great stuff. I shared this on Facebook and my followers really enjoyed it.
Keep up the great work! 🙂
OMG this looks like a delicious and nutritious recipe. Do you mind if I share this on Facebook to my followers? They’re health nuts and love these type of superfood recipes.

I’m trying to gauge the true nutritional content of the egg bites, specifically carbs. However, to do this you need to know not only the grams of carbs in the egg bites, but the serving size they measured, so you can translate those numbers into a percentage. (Is it 5% carb? 20%? 50%?) However, the serving size given is obviously wrong. First, they give it in fluid ounces, which is weird in itself. But worse, they say the serving is 130 fluid ounces. Um, that’s about 4 quarts! No, I’m sorry, those little egg bites were not 4 quarts! 😀 How can we find out the true serving size to compare to the nutritional contents? Maybe you good folks could find out for us?
By the way, I just happened to stumble into a Starbucks on Jan. 10, the day of the debut. I had the Bacon and Gruyere egg bites. They were delicious!

Well, I just googled for it again and they appear to have discovered and corrected the error. I found a nutrition panel this time that says 130 grams (not fluid ounces). That makes much more sense! (And that means the 9g of carbs represents about 7%. More than I’d like in my low carb diet, but perhaps okay for an occasional treat.)
Yay! Glad they changed it — we let them know right when you told us about the discrepancy, so you can be proud to know you were a part of that change! And thanks again for bringing it to our attention!
I have tried the chocolate smoothie and it is delicious and there is no way that you would ever know that it contains cauliflower if someone didn’t tell you.
Thanks! You can use coconut milk, it will just reduce the total protein in the nutrition info. Another non-soy option that contains as much protein is Ripple milk (the new milk made from peas).
you think this will work with the simple version of native forest coconut milk that doesn’t have guar gum? Also can i use whole milk from trader joes with active cultures as a starter?
thanks
Hi! We use the plain Native Forest and it works great. As for using dairy products to make this — we haven’t tried it but someone on our YouTube channel told us they didn’t have great luck with it. The bacteria that eat the dairy sugar may not like to feed on the coconut sugar. Keep us posted?
Hi! Yum — the culinary coconut milk should be able to be used as-is as long as it’s not coconut cream. We’d try it as-is first and see how the yogurt turns out (it will probably be nice and thick and delicious). If the yogurt is thicker than you’d like it to be, you can stir in a little water or coconut water after it’s already cultured. Will you let us know how it turns out?
What would you consider room temperature to be for the yogurt to sit in? Mine is still watery after two 24 hour periods. Also, it has a grainy taste. Help!
Hello! Let’s start trouble shooting! Honestly, we have some batches that just don’t turn out as great as others — that happens with fermentation. But, it sounds like yours might benefit from heading into the fridge (which should thicken it up). Was the flavor good? If the flavor is nice and sour like yogurt, try sticking it in the fridge and seeing if it thickens. We’ve found that graininess is usually a variable of the coconut milk. Our estimate of room temp is anywhere from 70-85 degrees, depending on season. The other variable is the probiotic. We’ve definitely found that the VSL #3 probiotic makes a thicker yogurt but we’re often surprised at how much it can thicken up in the fridge, too. Hope this helps. Will you keep us posted?
I have gotten to the stage of having my yogurt in the fridge for about 24 hours now and it’s still runny. Is there anything I can do to salvage this or, do I just start over with a new can of coconut milk and probiotics?
Hi! A runny texture doesn’t necessarily mean the batch didn’t work — it could just be that because it’s summer it stayed a little runnier. If the flavor is good, then you can use it like a European style yogurt/kefir. If the flavor is off, then something must have thrown the bacterial balance off (it happens!). We had a batch recently that turned out a little runnier than usual but still had good flavor! Keep us posted?
I’ve never had coconut yogurt before and I can’t buy it where I live. So I’m not sure if it’s off or not. It tastes something like sour cream. It doesn’t taste like rancid milk smells. So hopefully that’s a good sign lol. I’m going to try again and what my luck brings:). Thank you for responding!!
If it tastes like sour cream that sounds right! It should be a sour yet smooth flavor. Definitely don’t want it to taste like rancid milk smells so that’s a good sign that it doesn’t! 😉 Keep us posted on batch #2!!
Hi just wondering if this is good for a guy that needs to lose 80 to 90 pounds, i havnt been on a healthly clean diet before thanks. Btw do u have a cookbook other than the pregnancy one or can i use the giada recipes or someone else thanks.
Hi! You can definitely use this plan but you’d want to double the amount of food in each snack or increase the portion of protein at lunch and dinner by 50%. We don’t have another cookbook other than Healthy, Happy Pregnancy Cookbook (though those recipes are great for everyone!). We’d recommend eatingwell.com and cookinglight.com as great places to start and Ellie Krieger has a few really great cookbooks, too.
All four of the recipes using plain yogurt look very good, especially the cinnamon roasted banana. I use plain yogurt on baked sweet potatoes in lieu of butter or sour cream.
The roasted banana is one of our favorites because it changes the flavor of the banana to a more caramel-like flavor! We love your idea to use plain yogurt on baked sweet potatoes — that sounds delicious!
I want to try to make a creme brulee using yogurt. It looks like plain Greek yogurt might be the place to start. There are all yummy looking, especially the recipe with roasted bananas.
I went to starbucks yesterday and saw these egg bites. I asked if they had bread in them at all because I’m allergic to gluten. The lady insisted that they did because they “looked like it.” To my response “not really but is there a way to check?” While they unhappily looked in their binder I googled it and found your site faster than they could find the info which they couldn’t so thank you for letting me know! It’s sad when the employees don’t even know what’s in their own food lol.
We’re glad our post helped to clarify the ingredients and we totally agree with you — it would be great if employees got some training about ingredients, since so many customers have these same questions regarding what’s in each dish they offer and it would be a shame to dissuade someone from ordering something they could eat or tell them something was safe for them if it really contained an allergen! Did you end up getting the egg bites??
I love reading birth stories too, and this is an incredible one! You must have been so very tired, my friend. Way to get that 9lb little bundle out despite that – what a feat! Love that you can now remember the details forever. Xo
Thank you so much for sharing your story, Willow! I also love reading birthing stories, especially after watching my sweet niece #6 enter the world. I’m so happy to see Augie is a happy, healthy baby and can’t wait to meet him!
Can’t wait for you to meet him! Did you get to watch the birth??? That is so so so cool. With 6 nieces, you’re really getting your baby experience well fulfilled!! x
These egg bites are delicious and I love the egg white ones. Unfortunately like much of the Starbucks menu they are really high in Sodium. I think when discussing nutrition value in items you should mention sodium content.
Awesome! We are so happy you like this recipe…it’s a staple in our fridges, too! We actually just made a double batch and it turned out great. Used a larger jar and two cans of milk and 3 probiotic capsules. You could probably do it with one capsule, too, it would just take a bit longer to culture. We tasted it every 6 hours after the first day and stuck it in the fridge when the flavor was sour enough. Ours took about 2 days total, but it will definitely vary depending on temperature and probiotic. Let us know how it goes!
I’ve seen smoothie bowls before but have never thought of them while I’m suffering through my thick smoothie and narrow straw. What a glamorous way to eat one’s smoothie! Thank you.

January 9, 2017 at 2:46 pm (7 years ago)You can substitute this yogurt in ounce for ounce for dairy yogurt in most recipes.

January 11, 2017 at 4:04 am (7 years ago)I’m trying to gauge the true nutritional content of the egg bites, specifically carbs.
C & J Nutrition
January 11, 2017 at 1:20 pm (7 years ago)Hi! We are checking on this now and will report back. You’re right, those would be some pretty big egg bites if they were 130 ounces! Stay tuned.
Sharon (not the same one as your earlier commenter!)
January 18, 2017 at 8:41 am (7 years ago)Well, I just googled for it again and they appear to have discovered and corrected the error. I found a nutrition panel this time that says 130 grams (not fluid ounces). That makes much more sense! (And that means the 9g of carbs represents about 7%. More than I’d like in my low carb diet, but perhaps okay for an occasional treat.)

February 9, 2017 at 11:59 pm (7 years ago)This looks great! Do you think you could use coconut milk instead of soy milk?
C & J Nutrition
February 10, 2017 at 2:23 pm (7 years ago)Thanks! You can use coconut milk, it will just reduce the total protein in the nutrition info. Another non-soy option that contains as much protein is Ripple milk (the new milk made from peas).

March 31, 2017 at 6:59 pm (7 years ago)you think this will work with the simple version of native forest coconut milk that doesn’t have guar gum? Also can i use whole milk from trader joes with active cultures as a starter?
thanks
C & J Nutrition
March 31, 2017 at 8:21 pm (7 years ago)Hi! We use the plain Native Forest and it works great. As for using dairy products to make this — we haven’t tried it but someone on our YouTube channel told us they didn’t have great luck with it. The bacteria that eat the dairy sugar may not like to feed on the coconut sugar. Keep us posted?

June 20, 2017 at 2:43 am (6 years ago)I use “culinary” coconut milk that comes in “paper” box to avoid can liners. Generally it’s pretty thick! Should I cut it with water first?
C&J Nutrition
June 20, 2017 at 8:19 pm (6 years ago)Hi!

August 4, 2017 at 9:41 pm (6 years ago)What would you consider room temperature to be for the yogurt to sit in? Mine is still watery after two 24 hour periods. Also, it has a grainy taste. Help!
C&J Nutrition
August 5, 2017 at 12:57 am (6 years ago)Hello!

August 20, 2017 at 2:29 pm (6 years ago)I have gotten to the stage of having my yogurt in the fridge for about 24 hours now and it’s still runny. Is there anything I can do to salvage this or, do I just start over with a new can of coconut milk and probiotics?
C&J Nutrition
August 21, 2017 at 2:01 pm (6 years ago)Hi!
Natasha Hammond
August 22, 2017 at 12:27 am (6 years ago)I’ve never had coconut yogurt before and I can’t buy it where I live. So I’m not sure if it’s off or not. It tastes something like sour cream. It doesn’t taste like rancid milk smells. So hopefully that’s a good sign lol. I’m going to try again and what my luck brings:). Thank you for responding!!
C&J Nutrition
August 22, 2017 at 12:53 pm (6 years ago)If it tastes like sour cream that sounds right! It should be a sour yet smooth flavor. Definitely don’t want it to taste like rancid milk smells so that’s a good sign that it doesn’t! 😉 Keep us posted on batch #2!!

September 28, 2017 at 1:40 pm (6 years ago)Hi!

November 16, 2017 at 5:34 pm (6 years ago)I went to starbucks yesterday and saw these egg bites.
C&J Nutrition
November 16, 2017 at 7:52 pm (6 years ago)We’re glad our post helped to clarify the ingredients and we totally agree with you — it would be great if employees got some training about ingredients, since so many customers have these same questions regarding what’s in each dish they offer and it would be a shame to dissuade someone from ordering something they could eat or tell them something was safe for them if it really contained an allergen! Did you end up getting the egg bites??

August 8, 2018 at 11:43 am (5 years ago)Hi, I’ve been making this recipe and it has been amazing! Could you tell me the best way to do a double batch?
C&J Nutrition
August 8, 2018 at 1:07 pm (5 years ago)Awesome!
